Most Horrifying Plumbing Disasters for a Truly Terrifying Halloween
Most people enjoy a spooky Halloween. It’s a time for tricks and treats and eerie wonders like witches, vampires, ghosts and goblins. But no one wants to face the true horrors of a terrifyingly awful plumbing issue. In honor of this spooky season, we’ve put together a list of the most horrifying plumbing disasters.
Scariest Plumbing Problems
As professional plumbers, we’re not easily scared. We’ve seen it all and these are what we consider to be the five most terrifying plumbing issues that could happen to you.
Burst Pipes
What’s spookier than rattling chains? The sound water rushing out of a burst pipe. Burst pipes can happen any time of year for a variety of reasons including excessive water pressure, freezing temperatures, tree roots or just old, damaged pipes. A burst pipe is one of the worst plumbing problems because they can cause extensive damage and result in costly repairs.
Blocked Sewer Mainline
Your sewer mainline is the largest drain in your home. It’s the drain into which all the other drains in your home empty. It’s responsible for carrying away all the wastewater from your home to the city sewer mainline located beneath your street. Problems with your sewer mainline can be brought on by several things, including tree roots, aging pipes, loose soil or grease build up in your pipes. But the horrifying part is that a damaged or block sewer mainline could lead to sewage backing up into your home.
Loss of Water
We’re all so dependent on indoor plumbing that we hardly give it a thought until it isn’t there. Which is why it can be quite shocking when you turn on a faucet and nothing comes out. Complete water loss can be caused by a few things such as a broken or frozen water mainline or a problem with your home’s water pump. In addition to being a bit scary, not having any water is also a major inconvenience.
Mold Infestation
Mold can be terrifying when you find it in your home. It’s hard to get rid of and can be a health and safety hazard. Mold thrives in damp and dark places, which means if you notice mold growth on your walls, along your baseboards or near plumbing fixtures or pipes, you may have leak lurking in your home. First, find the source of the leak and get it fixed so there won’t be any further damage. Then you can focus on removing the mold from your home.
Exploding Water Heater
While rare, water heaters can explode and when they do, they can be deadly. It’s usually the result of a buildup of pressure, though a gas leak could also be the cause. Generally, excess pressure causes leaks or ruptures but in rare and extreme cases, they can explode. Of course, water heaters come equipped with a thermostat and pressure valve to prevent things like this from happening. Regular maintenance is also a great way to make sure your water heater is functioning properly and not building up excess pressure. Issues to watch for include a leaking pressure valve, rotten egg smell, popping noises or brown water. If you notice any of these, we recommend calling a professional for a water heater inspection right away.
